The problem
A course is rewritten every year from files nobody reopens.
The 2019 slides, the 2023 exam, the article that changed how you teach chapter 3. Filed by year, never by notion. When you need the one example that worked, you rebuild it from memory.
Mnemosyne OS reads all of it into one memory per subject. Not a summary. Your own material, findable by meaning and by the exact words, with the file named in every answer.

Your students

Your exam drafts stay on your computer.
You download, you launch. Nobody asks your name or your email. Everything on this page runs without a license and without credits, with a model on your own machine.
With a local model, nothing leaves. With a cloud model, only the passages that answer your question are sent, and you choose that. A vault marked MAXIMUM answers only questions that name it, and its content is not sent to a cloud model unless you confirm it, each time. Put your exam papers there.
How it works
Five steps, once. Then it just runs.
- 01 One vault per subject "+ New Vault", then "Add a folder to watch…". Subfolders by year if you like.
- 02 Export slides to PDF PowerPoint is not read. PDF, Word, LaTeX and Markdown are.
- 03 Drop the years in Slides, exams, handouts, articles. They enter on their own.
- 04 A title on every slide Your students' notes anchor on it. So does your own recall.
- 05 Ask Set the scope to the subject and ask. The answer cites your files.

Questions
What teachers ask before installing.
- How do I find what I said in an old lecture?
- Put the years of one subject in a folder watched by that subject's vault. Then ask in the chat: what you said about a notion, which lecture covered it, what example you used. The answer draws on your files and names them, so you reopen the exact slide or page.
- Does it read my PowerPoint files?
- No. Export the deck to PDF and drop the PDF in the folder: a PDF enters whole, however long. Word files enter at every save, and LaTeX and Markdown sources are read as they are.
- Do my exam papers stay confidential?
- They stay on your computer. With a local model, nothing leaves. With a cloud model, only the passages that answer a question are sent. You can also mark the vault that holds them as MAXIMUM protection: it answers only questions that name it, and its content is not sent to a cloud model unless you confirm it, each time.
- Can it write exercises from my course?
- Yes, from your own material: give it the exercise and ask for variants at the same difficulty. It writes from the passages it retrieved and you review the result. It does not grade papers.
- Is it free?
- The download is the complete OS, free, with no account and no email. Everything on this page runs without a license and without credits, with a model on your own machine. If you prefer a cloud model, you load prepaid credits of 10, 25 or 50 $, or use your own API key.
- How do my students benefit?
- With a title on every slide and the PDF handed out. Students who use Mnemosyne OS copy the first words of each slide at the head of their notes, and that line is what brings their note, their photo of the projector and your PDF back together. - Do I need a powerful computer?
- It runs from 8 GB of RAM, in a lighter mode with a cloud model. Everything local is comfortable from 16 GB. The download page details the configuration. System requirements →
- I write my courses in LaTeX or Obsidian. Does it work?
