The memory my brain kept asking for

For twenty years, my problem was never a lack of ideas. It was waiting.

Waiting for a developer to reply. To understand the brief. To draw up the plan, then the quote. Finding the budget. Following up. Three days to find out whether an idea could stand, and by the end of those three days, the momentum was already gone. Most of my projects did not die from a lack of talent around me. They died in latency.

The problem was never the idea

Here is a detail people underestimate: for some brains, the slowness of the world is not an inconvenience, it is a cause of death. Mine runs fast, shoots off in every direction, holds an entire system in one piece. When the answer takes three days to come back, that is not “three days lost”. It is the idea going out, because attention has already moved on to something else.

I have a neurodivergent brain. For a long time I believed that was the bug. The bug was actually elsewhere: in the chain. Me (the vision) → someone who translates → a developer who re-translates into code → a budget to find before even testing whether it works. Loss at every link. Nine ideas out of ten died in translation, never in execution. They were never even tested.

What changed in 2026

People tell me “you code fast now, thanks to AI”. That is not the real change. The real change is that the coordination tax is gone.

Vision, architecture, budget, code: no longer four people passing a baton and dropping it. One brain runs the whole chain without letting go of the thread. And for a system like Mnemosyne, where the license, the memory engine, the cartridge store and the SDK must all tell the same story, that coherence has to be held in one piece. It is exactly what a brain like mine knows how to do, and exactly what the handoffs destroyed.

The hard answer to “why not in the 2000s”: the me of the year 2000 could not have done it, even with the tool. It took twenty years of aborted projects to know precisely what to build, and where to draw the line. The tool arrived exactly when I was ready to use it.

So I built it for my brain first

Mnemosyne OS did not start from market research. It started from a gap I live with every day: “who is this guy texting me, and where do I know him from?”, “what did I promise, to whom, and when?”

For an ADHD brain, that is not comfort. It is relief. The first cartridge I actually finished, Archipel, manages my contacts: it remembers people on my behalf, without my having to file anything away. That is not a feature. It is a prosthesis. The external memory my brain had been asking for all along.

And that, I believe, is the one advantage nobody can copy. Someone who does not hurt where I hurt can clone the architecture. They cannot clone the why. I did not design a theoretical memory for an imagined user. I designed my own, and it turned out to work for other people.

What I am not claiming (yet)

The commercial shortcut would be to sell you the whole dream, right now. I will not do that, it is the same discipline as in our benchmark article: we announce what runs, and we say honestly what is not there.

What runs today: the OS works on all three systems, Windows, Linux, macOS (M1) and it runs on a machine with 8 GB of RAM. No, you will not run every engine on a small machine. But the intelligence-engine cartridges, Archipel, Resto and the others, work, and they run light. That part is real. It is tested, and you can download it.

What is not there: automatic life capture, the mobile app that syncs your day without friction, the memory that writes its own introspection. Those are directions, not kept promises. The day they run, I will announce them as what they are, not before.

There is an irony I own: I spend my days building an external memory so humans can stop carrying everything in their heads… and I carry ten years of vision in mine, with no backup. The worst-shod cobbler in town. I am working on that too.

Who this is for, really

Not for everyone. Not yet, and maybe never “for the masses”. I build for two audiences I know from the inside.

Those who have already been betrayed by an AI’s forgetting, who lost months of context when a chat was reset to zero, who are tired of re-explaining everything to a machine that should already know.

And the neurodivergent, those for whom remembering without effort is not a luxury but a crutch. Those whose brain runs too fast for the world, and who just need, for once, a tool that keeps up.

This is not yet another “second brain”. Your data does not leave for someone else’s cloud; it stays with you, on your machine. What I am building is a relationship layer: a memory that perceives you, situates you, reveals you, and that you govern.
